England AAA Indoor Championships, Birmingham, 25th & 26th January 2003
Athletes Sonia Kennedy, Dara Foley, Kelly Proper, Holly Deegan, Kalyn Sheehan and Mairead Murphy together with coaches Brid Golden, Andy Hallissey and Alan Golden, made the trip to Birmingham to compete in these prestigous and competitive Championships.
Results are as follows:- Saturday
Kelly Proper & Holly Deegan jumped well but unfortunately did not make the final.
Kalyn Sheehan was superb to come through two rounds of the 60 meters to reach the final. She ran 8.17 secs with the winner clocking 7.89s and she was outside the medals.
Sinead Donnelly added 8 centimeters to her personal best and was 6th overall, just outside the medals on jumps cleared.
Holly Deegan came through a very tough qualifying round and came 4th in the semi final but did not make the final.
Dara Foley was looking like a medal for a long time in the high jump but things went against him in the later stages and he finished outside the medals.
Sonia Kennedy reached the final of the shot and finished a solid seventh.
Kalyn, Holly, Sinead & Kelly are all in their age again next year.
Sundays results are as follows:-
Kalyn Sheehan had a personal best indoor jump of 5.08 meters and finished 4th, just 5 cm away from a medal.
Kelly Proper jumped 1.50m in the high jump but did not make the final.
Mairead Murphy threw close to her best in the shot putt despite being injured and finished a solid 6th.
In the 60 meters hurdles, Holly Deegan, Sinead Donnelly and Kalyn Sheehan all competed. Kalyn was 4th fastest in her heat in a time of 9.31. She was in with a medal chance but hit the third of five hurdles and finsihed a fantastic 5th.
Four of the seven athletes are in the same age group again next year and they all gained valuable experience in a major competition. Well done to all!!
