Ferrybank A.C athletes win four
British Championship medals
Ferrybank Athletic Club continued their
recent run of success at the British under 20 indoor champiuonships
in Birmingham last week-end winning 1 gold , 1 silver and 2 bronze
medals along with other outstanding performances.
Kelly Proper led the medal haul winning
the gold medal in the long jump. She did so in fine style with a
leap of 6.17m, a championship best ever performance beating the old
mark of 6.05m set 17 years ago in 1990. Mairead Murphy produced a
lifetime best performance in the 60m hurdles which won her the
silver medal with a time of 8.58s, signiificantly better than her
previous best set last week-end when winning the Scottish title in
Glasgow. Mary O Connor in the 800m and Mairead Deevy in the 400m
both produced bronze medal winnning performances, outstanding by any
standards.
Niamh Whelan finished 4th in a top
class 200m. her time of 24.56s was a huge improvement on her
lifetime best and this time qualifies her for the world under 18
championships to be held later this year. Her clubmate mairead
Murphy also improved her best to 24.66s to finish fifth.
Kitty Walsh was outstanding in
finishing 5th in the under 17 800m final. gavin Kennedy produced a
lifetime best in the 60m hurdles to advance to the semi finals.
Meanwhile in Nenagh the younger members
of ferrybank A.C. were contesting the Munster under 10 - 13
championships and had lots of success. Ciara Giles Doran was the
star performer taking gold in the under 13 60m hurdles, 60m and long
jump. Luke Kelly (under 13 high jump) and Kate Daniels ( under 12
high jump and shot) also won gold medals. Ann O Shea (under 13 60m)
and Paul Murphy (under 12 long jump) won silver medals. There were
lots of medal winners form the club in the under 10 & 11 team
competition.
