AAA Individual Events, Sheffield, Saturday 16th August & Sunday 17th August, 2003

Six athletes from Ferrybank Athletic Club competed in this competition last weekend. Saturdays events showed just
how high the standard was when no medal or final place was achieved by the athletes. All athletes performed well with
Jessie Barr clearing 1.55m in her first major competition outside Ireland. Holly Deegan broke her personal best twice in the
300m heat & semi final.

However, Sunday was expected to be more successful and so it turned out to be. Hayley Murphy ran well in the 200 meters
semi final for girls under 15 and was narrowly excluded from the final. Then Sonia Kennedy threw well to finish 5th in the final
of the girls under 17. Things were getting better when both Kalyn Sheehan and Mairead Murphy reached the last 8 of 30
competitors in the long jump. Going into the last round, Kalyn was in 2nd position but then two girls jumped better to
momentarily put her back into 4th place. Then Kalyn pulled out a personal best of 5.51 meters to regain the silver medal
on 'countback'. While she tied with another girl on 5.51m, her second best jump was superior. No one else could better
Kalyn and she held second, just 3 centimetres behind the winner.

The heats of the hurdles were exciting with both Kalyn Sheehan and Mairead Murphy winning their heats. Jessie Barr also had a
personal best in this girls under 15 competition. However, the third heat was the fastest and the girls knew they had it all to do.
Three hours later, in the last event of the weekend, Kalyn & Mairead finished 2nd & 3rd respectively after a photo finish bringing
the medal total for the weekend to 2 silver and 1 bronze.

The Track & Field season reaches its conclusion next weekend in Mosney where Ferrybank Athletic Club will have 35 members representing Waterford at the National Finals.
