Superb National Cross Country
Championships for Ferrybank A.C.
Ferrybank Athletic Club demonstrated
once again that they are one of the most successful cross country
clubs in Ireland at first week-end of the National Juvenile Cross
Country championships held in St Augustines College, Dungarvan on
Sunday last. The club had two individual winners along with
a first , second and third placings in the team
sections.
Ciara Cronin was once again outstanding
when she led from gun to tape to win the under 16 girls
race. Ciara stamped her class on the rest of the field
when she opened a lead of 40metres at the half way point and
maintained this to the finish. Kitty Walsh ran an excellent race to
finish in 10th position and with the back up of Sophie Molloy, Jane
Halley and Gillian Walsh this team took bronze medals in the
inter club section.
Shane Quinn was simply a class apart in
the boys under 16 event, again like ciara, taking an early lead.
Shane stretched his lead throughout the race winning by in excess of
100m and was the most impressive winner of any race on
the day. An excellent run by John Francis in sixth position saw him
take a medal along with Shane on the victorious Munster team in the
inter provincial section.
In the girls under 18 race, a
fifth place from Lorraine McCarthy and 11th place for Niamh Ryan set
up their team well and with good performances from Grainne Brennan,
Mary O Connor and Grainne Quinn this team took well
deserved silver medals in the inter club section. All of these
girls featured on the Waterford team which finished second in the
intercounty section.
In the boys under 18 race, Ferdia O
hAodha produced his best run of the season to finish an excellent
4th overall just ahead of clubmates Patrick Hogan in 5th and Niall
Tuohy in 6th. With Conor Dooney, Gavin Downey, Kevin Cooper and
David Molloy not far behind this team were easy and
worthy winners of the gold medals in the inter club section.
They also made up the Waterford team which won silver in the inter
club section.
The second and final day of the
National Juvenile Cross Country will be held on december 9th in
Athlone Institute of Technology and Ferrybank A.C. will be hoping to
build on the success of the opening day at this event.
