Waterford has the honour of hosting the
2006 Celtic International between Ireland, Ulster, Scotland &
Wales. This one per event competition for under 16 & under 18
was a huge success and great credit must go to the organising
committee, officials, participants and the Waterford Corporation and
staff for what turned out to be a most enjoyable days competition.
Ireland had to give way to Scotland in the overall competition but
this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the local contingent who were
delighted with the overall level of competition and organisation.
Waterford is now in a position to seek to host many of our domestic
fixtures since the upgrade of the track at the RSC and once one or
two small equipment issues are ironed out, there is no reason that
Waterford can not host the 2007 All Ireland under 14 / 19
Championships, bringing over 2000 people into the city for a weekend
in July.
Local club Ferrybank Athletic Club
provided 12 athletes to the Irish teams and their performances are
as follows:-
Mairead Murphy - 1st 80m hurdles
(equalling Susan Smiths record)
Patricia Barry - 1st 3k
Niamh Whelan -1st 200 meters
Jessie Barr - 2nd in the 300m hurdles and
triple jump
Hayley Murphy - 2nd 100 meters
