National Senior Championships

Athletics by All Rounder  (from Waterford Today)


Last weekend in Santry Stadium Dublin at the All Ireland Senior Track and Field Championships a small entry from Waterford took part and they won one silver and two bronze medals.
On Saturday Jamie Costin, West Waterford AC who will be competing in the Olympics next month had a very impressive walk in the 10km event to finish a close second to hot favourite Robert Heffernan. Costin recorded a time of 30 mins 9.88 seconds, well inside his personal best.
On Sunday it was the turn of two of our younger athletes to catch the eye. Barry Upton, Ferrybank AC took the bronze in the 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 54.64 seconds. In the women’s 100m hurdles Niamh Cummins KCK again had a personal best at 14.94 finishing in 3rd place.
Other high placings were secured by Catherine Grant, Tramore AC in the javelin where she was placed 5th and Liam Hamilton, West Waterford AC was also 5th in the Pole Vault. David McCarthy, West Waterford AC was 6th in the 3,000m Junior Championship.
