Ferrybank athletic Club made their annual trip to the Kelvin hall
in Glasgow last week-end for the Scottish Indoor under 13, 15, 17
& 20 championships and once again emerged as the best club at
the championships coming home with a haul of 24 medals- 9 gold, 9
silver & 6 bronze.
With in excess of 50 athletes and as many coaches and supporters
travelling this trip has become one of the leading fixtures on the
calendar for the club. The results show that these young athletes
from all over the city are continuing to progress into junior and
senior levels with the same level of success that has prevailed for
the past number of years at juvenile level..
On day one of competition, Ciaran Donnelly was the leading
performer winning the 60m hurdles and long jump and finishing second
in the high jump under 15. In fact the boys under 15 long jump was
one of the talking points of the weekend as Ferrybank athletes took
all the medals with Adam Heaslip and Stephen Murphy taking silver
and bronze behind Ciaran. Shane Quinn decimated the opposition in
the boys under 15 1500m lapping several of the athletes on his way
to the gold medal. Cara Kennedy took silver in the girls under 15
shot while Theo Wallace took bronze in the under 15 high jump. Ben
Kiely kept the flag flying for the under 13s when he took bronze in
the hurdles.
Day two of competition saw many of the clubs international stars
take to the boards and most raised the level of performances another
notch. Niamh Whelan took double gold in the girls under 17 60m and
200m and was simply a class apart from her opposition recording two
personal bests in the process. Mairead Murphy was in sparkling form
under 20 winning the 60m hurdles in a big personal best time and
taking two silvers in the high jump and 200m. Kalyn Sheehan was
absolutely on top of her game winning the 300m comprehensively and
finishing second in the 60m hurdles only minutes after the 300m
under 17. Mairead Deevy entered new levels with a tactically perfect
400m under 20 taking silver just losing gold in a photo finish. In
the boys under 17 the Ferrybank A.C. distance brigade once again
excelled with Nialll Tuohy and Kevin Cooper dominating the 800m and
1500m rerspectively. At under 20 level Gavin Downey and Ferdia O
Haodha took silver and bronze in the 1500m and Karen English took
silver in the girls race. Gavin Kennedy, bronze in the boys under 17
long jump and Christopher Russsell bronze in the under 17 400m
completed the medal haul for the club on a most successful and
enjoyable week-end. With numerous other finalists it looks like this
trip will remain firmly in the clubs plans for the future.
