underage championships.
Ferrybank athletic Club athletes covered themselves in glory last
week-end at the Odysessy arena in Belfast and the Kelvin Hall in
Glasgow.
In Belfast Kelly Proper won the Irish Senior Long Jump title in
fine style equalling her own Irish Senior Record with an outstanding
leap of 6.19m. As well as equalling her Irish record, this jump is
also in excess of the qualifying standard for this Summers European
junior Championships.
In Glasgow, Ferrybank A.C. had further success at the the under
13, 15, 17 & 20 championships. In the under 13 age group, Ciara
Giles Doran had an outstanding competition winning the long jump
with a new championship record of 4.66m. She also added a pair of
silver medals to her collection when she took second place in the
60m hurdles and 200m. Ann O Shea won a bronze medal in the 60m final
and Promise Owoeye also took bronze in the shot putt. In the under
15 age group Shane Quinn was the star performer leading from gun to
tape to easily win the 1500m also setting a new championship best of
4.14.16. In the under 20 age group Niamh Whelan was in fine form
winning the 60m with a new personal best of 7.72s and the 200m in
24.84s. Mairead Murphy won the 60m hurdles in a lifetime best of
8.65s and was just one hundredth of a second behind her clubmate
when she took 200m silver with a time of 24.85seconds , another
lifetime best. Mairead Deevy took the bronze medal in the 400m.
Unfortunately the club was denied further success when the plane
due to bring over fifty of their group from Dublin to Scotland was
cancelled and most of the group had to return home.
